luther
episode 1 to 4
luther is a BBC crime drama based in and around London. the main character in the show and detective Jhon Luther is played by a black actor, which is uncommon for a lead role to be filled by a black actor, however, in Luther, this does not seem to be a focal point and they do not play on this as Luther is not defined by his race. At the beginning of the series, we do not see a long introduction the story is jumped into very quickly and as we go along we learn about the character and the stories. throughout Luther, we see hugely diverse characters which show London in a positive light in being diverse. in many of the scenes, many of the police officers we see will be black.
In the beginning of the show the main female roles, we see Zoe, rose and Alice is all shown as strong and intelligent women. Zoe is shown as in dependant and intelligent which we see due too her job as a lawyer showing she is successful. Zoe is shown as strong and independant as we see she made the decision to fend for herself and leave John and is successful which we see through her job and a nice house, this shows the audience women are not reliant on men and are just as capable to look after themselves. rose is the boss and a female detective, which is often perceived as a male job, therefore, this shows women are capable of doing jobs that may have previously been labelled as male jobs. rose is also the boss of Luther and many other male police officers which shows females can hold higher status jobs then man and be in control. roses job shows she is strong and fearless as the job can be seen as dangerous and in some elements very physically, therefore, showing females can be strong not only physically but also mentally. Alice may not be as much of a positive role model in comparison to the others due to her violent actions however she does show women are strong and powerful. alice shows she is highly intelligent and able to manipulate those around her to do things for her, showing her power. none of the females roles is represented as we may be used to women being represented and none are views as vulnerable or weak which is nice for the viewer to see successful and admirable women represented. in many crime dramas we would often see women sexualised and made to look vulnerable, however, Luther takes a different approach as they show multiple strong and intelligent women. although Zoe does get murdered we still do not view her as vulnerable or weak due to the way we had seen her in previous episodes being fearless.
Luther who is played by actor Idris Elba, is seen as strong and harsh as he clearly does a very difficult and challenging jobs, however at some points we do see him as being vulnerable and weak as we get the impression he may have some kind of mental health issues which is unusual to be seen in the main role character as they do not often get portrayed as vulnerable. we see this is two scenes one where he kicks a door in at zoes house showing he is not in control of his actions and emotions and the second where he is standing on the edge of a roof which gives us the idea he may struggle from mental health issues. Luther is unique in the sense not may crime dramas would show the main character as being vulnerable and would usually portray this through a less significant character which is normally a female, therefore, I feel it is good Luther focuses on this issue as mentl health issues especially in males often goes ignored.
The show also helps bring attention to serious issues such as budget cuts to the police force. In one particular scene Rose is seen telling officers they must where bulletproof vest where available, this could be seen to be making a joke of the issues as she does not state the problem just vaguely refers to it. This shows that protection and some of the most important aspects often have to be sacrificed due to the budget cuts and bring awareness to the lack of funding the police have despite the risk they are taking to do their job.
