Analysis of life on mars

life on mars is a British television series, which could fall into many different categories but mainly a crime drama, as well as si-fi due to thew supernatural events that happen within the series. the main character we follow in the series is names Sam who is a detective chief inspector. in the start we see sam in the current day working on a case about a missing girl, shortly after Sam is involved in a incedent that takes him back the the 70s where he is working as a detective.

In the show there are many authority white male characters which is representative of the times. in the show there is a lack of women and women in power and people from different ehtnic backgrounds. in the office where sam works it is clearly dominated by white middle age men who at the time would have been high in power. the only person we come across of a different ethnicity is the black bar man which is very unexpected, furthermore the detective is very pleseant towards the man which is very unexpected of this time as we would expect him to make a joke with some racial references however this is not what happens which takes the audience by surprise. Within the episode you can clearly see the difference in the way men and women are treated and the lack of perspective women would have had at this period of time and how men would have been seen and superior and the dominant gender.

When the series is trying to portray being set in the 70s it is made very clearly to the audience due to their cloths, the way they talk and their surroundings however also because of the people in the moderns day office at the beginning we saw a lot of women and characters of different ethical backgrounds where as in the office supposed to be in the 70s the office is dominated by white males which makes clear to the audience the time period it is supposed to portray. We can also see the time period due to the things going on in the office such as smoking in the work place which would have happened in the 70s whereas we know this would not happen in the modern day. As well as this the treatment of staff gives away the time period as we see the boss being very aggressive and even hitting staff which again would have happened in the 70s however we know that would not happen in the work place now.

The techniques the officers use is also a clear indicator of the times as they do not have the technology that we would have in the current day and have to solve the crimes basses on theory's and belief where as in the modern day we would have things such as DNA and finger prints to help solve a crime where as in the 70s they laugh as sam when he suggests using these techniques. The way interviews and viewing the crime scene takes place is very confusing for sam and the audience as it is very all over the place where as in the modern day there is a clearer way and method they would take to conduct interviews and preserve the crime scene.

As the audicance we would mainly relate to the main character sam as he can be seen as very confused and doesn't understand what is going on which is how the audience is also feeling, the audience is finding new things out and figuring it at at the same time as sam so we can strongly relate to him as a character.
