Representation of women in the film headhunters
Headhunters was released in 2011 in Norway as an action thriller film. the film portrays the successful but insecure corporate recruiter Roger Brown who lives a double life as an art thief to fund his lavish lifestyle. He finds out that one of his job prospects is in possession of a valuable painting and sets out to steal it.
in the film, women are generally misrepresented and umderrepresentd.this begins with the first female we are introduced to Rodgers wife Diana.when we first met Diana it is similar to many other female characters, she is naked therefore being sexualised to the viewer. although we can also see she is a strong and independent woman as she owns her own art gallery this is overshadowed by the fact Rodger continuously goes above and beyond to buy her expensive gifts which leads us to think she is very materialistic and in the relationship for the money appeal. later in the film, it is also revealed that Diana is cheating on women which would further paint a negative image of women in the film.
lotte is the second female character we are introduced to which is a very similar was to Diana. lotte is introduced to us as the women having affair with Rodger which is how we first meet her while she is having sex with Rodger which further supports the sexualisation of women in this film. in this scene we also see lotte suggest the idea of the pair going to dinner together at which stage Rodger becomes angry and ends the relationship between the two which objectifies women as she is only being used for sex and on Rodgers terms. later in the film when the pair meets again we see lotte trying to reignite things with Rodger and even tries to kiss him, which suggests women are reliant on a male figure and need men to rely on. it also shows lotte as desperate as she throws herself ay Rodger by using her physical attraction.
the first time we meet Natasja she is similarly naked at our first introduction. Natasja is a Russian prostitute which is a very demoralizing representation of women as it shows her with very little self-respect and as a sexual object with the sole job to satisfy men's needs.
overall throughout the movie, there are few females we meet and those we do see are often very sexualised which is not a very adequate representation of women as they are seen as sexual objects.
