Representation of regional and national identity

In the UK when we are from a certain area we are often associated with certain stereotypes that may have been created by TV shows people have seen that represent this area. An example of this would be Shameless. shameless is set in Manchester which we establish by the actors and actresses strong Manchester accents which help us associate them with the there region. with all the main characters we see in the show we see they appear to be wearing very working class type scruffy clothing as nobody appears in a suit or smartly dressed which gives us the idea they are a working-class family and are a little bit dirty. the strong language used in the show also supports the idea of a working-class family as they can use and say inappropriate things you would not expect from an educated person which gives us the impression of little education. A lot of the characters are displayed as drinkers and are often drunk which suggests all people from Manchester drink and that this is normal. the set for the show and the families flat which appears to be in an estate like area suggests this is quite a poor area and maybe not so nice to live in.
