ANTI-SOCIAL MEDIA How WhatsApp, Snapchat and other social media has fuelled a 66 percent explosion in pervert teacher cases over the past few years
In a recent article produced by the Sun newspaper, they highlight the growing number of teachers in recent years that have been suspended in schools for sexual misconduct and the growing number is surprising. They discuss the issues with social media platforms and how they allow and make such behaviour so easy to occur. Over a shocking 96 teachers were suspended in 2017 for sexual misconduct which is an all-time high for many years. 8The suns investigation claims a 66 percent rise in teachers suspended for sexual misconduct in the last four years. This help brings attention to the larger issue of minors being contacted online as a target by sexual predators. which is a huge and very common problem that is faced by minors online research carried out recently revealed 3186 offences against children in 2015/2016 by offenders using the internet. young minors online are often targets of predators and it is important that parents know what their child is doing online as they may often not know who they are talking to and quickly become involved in vulnerable situations. In recent times this is a growing issue as the internet is an easy way for predators to contact minors and can even lead to a very hostile situation in some cases if they agree to meet the person they believe they are talking too.
The source was produced by the sun which is a tabloid newspaper, who are thought to be favourable of the conservative party and over the years have had a close connection with the party, therefore, some views could be seen as bias to protect the party or paint them in a good light. however, I do not feel the is story is supportive of the party as it is highlighting the failures of there education system and issues.
In my opinion, I feel young people online are very vulnerable and easily targeted by predators and often very easily convinced into doing the thing that they shouldn't. I feel the larger issue is why do their parents not know what they are doing online as it is there responsibility to know what their child is do ing and keep them safe. young people may also need to be taught more in school about the risks 0f being online and how to safely use the internet and how they can avoid these issues and if they do occur where they can report them. Going back to the issue of teachers contacting students online this is totally shocking and inappropriate teachers should be trusted members of society who in many cases their student will rely on and I think this is a manipulation of trust and I feel teachers may be taking advantage of there position.I feel certain social media platform to make this easier to anonymously contact someone or even find them, however, I feel it is inappropriate to have any student on any social media platform and this should be punishable. maybe the school should monitor staffs social media are more closely to eliminate this issue as well as pupils.
