Dreams VS Formation
In this video we see Dizzee appear onto of a piano which is quick shocking and amusing to the audience as this is not how we would see a typical rap or hip-hop video start and is more light-hearted and humorous compared to other videos we normally see in this genre. from the beginning we can already see the video is going to be a different kind of video then what we may expect as in the beginning we see the older lady talking who was previously part of a children's TV program called watch with mother, therefore this foreshadowed to us that it was going be more light-hearted and for an entertainment purpose. by using a layout used by a children's program suggests it is going to be amusing and appeals to the audience as in a typical rap video we may see a more aggressive and dark setting whereas this is quite child-friendly and light. in the video when dizzy first appears it seems quite comical as the way he appears from the box and the layout on top of the piano this makes us think it may be quite amusing and comical however the issues Dizzee discusses in the song very much contradict this as he talks about many serious issues we may be currently facing in society, the two contradict one another as the way the video is shot appears quite light-hearted however the issues being discussed are very serious and should not be taken lightly. By doing this dizzy gets over his view and expressed the issues as well as bringing awareness however while doing this also entertains the audience in a slightly comical way. although serious issues are being discussed it is made light-hearted and entertaining by the use of other characters such as a clown in the background which further embeds the idea of a children TV program.
1n the video Dizzee talks about his past and how he came to be in the position he is in and talks openly about social issues such as police brutality. In this video, I feel Dizzee very much goes again the typical stereotype of a black male. however, the video does illustrate the treatment of black males while two other characters in the video are approached and mistreated by police. in the video Dizzee talks about his past and how he reached the place he is at and how he achieved his dreams which reflects the title of the video 'dreams', by telling his own story of how he overcome some issues he may have faced to archive his goals and dreams this shows the audience that this is possible for them and we can all reach our dreams and do good, this can be quite relevant to audience members and be encouraging of them as they may be able to relate to his situation.
Overall the video has a very good message and presents this is a quite comical and entertaining way. Dizzee is encouraging younger people to follow their dreams and suggests that all issues we may face can be overcome to reach our dreams and he uses himself as an example.
In the video formation, we see a very prominent message which focuses on issues in New Orleans where there was sever flooding, this area was generally populated of black families and therefore mainly black families suffered the effects. in the video we see Beyonce on a New Orleans police car which is underwater, I feel this shows a very strong and powerful message. I feel like creating this video was a very rational way of trying to help with the issue, although I feel its aim was to help the situation and bring awareness to the people I feel it created a lot of negative thoughts as many may have thought she was criticising certain institutions. I do not feel this video would have helped bring positive awareness to the issue as I feel the focus of the issue may have been lost at some points because of other things such as the clothing in the video, which at some point was very minimal.
Overall I feel both videos have very strong messages and are very similar in encouraging people to be themselves and encouraging people to overcome issues we may face in society. Dizzee uses quite a light-hearted way to put his message across whereas Beyonce used a stronger and harsher approach to show the power they have and to influence others. the video for dreams is a wider statement and focuses on many areas and can appeal to everyone but many black men, however, could be encouraging for everyone to overcome social issues whereas Beyonce's video is more clearly aimed and the specific issue and based in a certain area. Dreams promote more of a positive message as it tells a story of overcoming the issues, therefore, shows a happy ending where as formation focuses on more serious and un resolved issues and does not present a positive outcome.
